A/N - KOH007 Letter written by Wilhelm Köhler [translation by Gene Maas with corrections by Siegfried Krause]

Ostenfeld
9 January 1952

Our dear relatives!

While I was visiting with my brother, Franz, after the Christmas holidays, he gave your address to me. So I would like to send dear greetings to you. As you well know, dear ones, fate has hit all of us hard. We lost our dear precious homeland and all our belongings, we only can be grateful to our Lord God that we can enjoy the best health. I also became 60 years old already and tried in vain to get a dear job again as a shepherd. So I have been unemployed 4 years already. I have two sons (30 and 27 years old), both are married and to our greatest joy are busy working as shepherds. We have received no sign of life from Fritz, our dear brother who was kidnapped by Russia almost 7 years ago. So life changes, joy and sorrow.

As we have learned, Franz Buss has sustained a serious leg malady in an accident. It is very sad for Aunt Block and children that Uncle Block died after an awful accident. Our oldest son, Walter, was in captivity in America from1942 to1946; he had good care and treatment in the time he spent there.

In the hope that these lines reach you in best health, we send good wishes in the new year, and send cordial greetings to you and the children.

Mrs. Emma and your cousin, Wilhelm Köhler
